The Welfare Team's role is to support the families and carers of our 420 members, as well as those members who are living independently. They carry out this role through visits and phone calls. Some only need occasional phone contact to check that things are going okay, but others need more intensive support, with ongoing contact by phone and through visits.
General areas of support needed are: the opportunity to talk about feelings; help filling in benefit forms and appealing decisions; keeping up with changes in benefits and services; liaising with Social Services and other agencies; attending reviews and meetings with Social Services, Schools and Day Services.
The Team are involved with the Bubbles Club, which is our toddler group for children with special needs, and their siblings. During the Bubbles Club morning parents have an opportunity to meet together with a member of the Welfare Team for tea/coffee and a chat. This group continues to be very strong and proactive in supporting each other and the Bubbles Club. This Parent's Support Group meets 3/4 times a year for a social activity.
The Welfare Team currently comprises of Alison and Mandi. They can be contacted whenever needed through the Reading Mencap office or for less urgent matters can be contacted on their emails of
