Members of our Coffee Club were cheering for good when they went to see Peter Pan at the Hexagon.
They loved the show and got to meet its star Justin Fletcher and I’m a Celebrity finalist Iain Lee, who was in the audience!
It can be difficult for people with learning disabilities to take part in social activities without the support of an organisation like Reading Mencap, which is why we’re hoping we can win a £2,000 grant from Starbucks.
Coffee Club makes a real difference to the people who attend it, who mostly live alone or with elderly carers. The majority are unable to work and are living on low incomes. The club meets every other week during the day and helps to break down barriers to joining in with social activities by helping members with transport and supporting them during outings.
An experienced Family Adviser runs the group which enables attendees to talk over problems with her and other club members. Good friendships have formed between members who are able to meet up and help each other outside of Reading Mencap.
If you or someone you know would benefit from a group like Coffee Club, which supports people with a learning disability to experience new things, develop their skills and participate in their community, please call us on 0118 966 2518 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
