A line of people walking through Forbury Gardens

Get ready for Walk a Mile in Our Shoes 2025

Our inclusive 1-mile sponsored walk is back!

We’ll be taking over Forbury Gardens on Wednesday 18 June from 12 noon – 1.30pm to mark Learning Disability Week and we hope 2025 will be even bigger.

Last year, more than 120 walkers – many from local special schools in addition to clients from Reading Mencap’s clubs and 4ME Activities Service – took part and were guided along the accessible route by 60 amazing corporate volunteers.

Children and adults with a learning disability, their family, friends and carers and the wider community are all invited to join us again this year.

Kate Stonehouse, Reading Mencap’s corporate engagement officer, said the event was aimed at raising awareness of learning disability.

She said: “We’re delighted Walk a Mile in Our Shoes is back for a second year and we hope it will be an even bigger and better celebration for 2025.

“People with learning disabilities are among the most disadvantaged and marginalised in society and we want to bring everyone together to be seen, heard and celebrated!”

The University of Reading is partnering with Reading Mencap for this year’s event.

Entry is £5 (carers and Reading Mencap members are free).
